In my experience, the thing about pies is that in general you either love them or you don’t. I fall into the former category and have spent more than 60 years sampling lots of them, initially from butchers’ shops in Leeds, then elsewhere in the country, then from Supermarkets and, most recently, from on-line suppliers. Whereas “steak and ale” is just one of the legion of pies available today, there were far fewer options available in the past and this variety has always been among my favourites. The even better news is that these pies from Eat Great Meat are my all time favourite “steak and ale” pies. It’s a bonus that they come with a realistic price tag.They have a good glazed short crust that does not overpower the filling, and the filling itself is made up of an ample helping of tasty lean beef chunks mixed with just enough thick and luscious gravy. The first taste took me back to my childhood in Leeds, but even so I couldn’t actually remember enjoying a pie then as much as I enjoyed these. For me at least, they are a winner and if I lived near Wortley I would never be out of the shop. Good, honest, old-fashioned food at a sensible price.
